Chulalongkorn University-I2 Enterprise Collaboration in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Research and Development for Low-Carbon Society

Chulalongkorn University Center of Excellence on Petrochemical and Materials Technology (PETROMAT) signed an MOU with I2 Enterprise Public Company Limited to study, research, and develop work related to greenhouse gas emissions, carbon credits, and the collection and processing of carbon data using information technology, as well as to jointly organize activities involving a network of researchers both in the university and in the industry. The goal is to enhance the potential of emission management in Thailand to achieve emission reduction goals.

The signing ceremony was held on May 7, 2024, in Room 705/2, 7th floor, CU Research Building. The MOU was signed by Prof. Dr. Hathaikarn Manuspiya, Director of PETROMAT, and Mr. Atiporn Limcharoen, Chairman of the Executive Committee of I2 Enterprise PCL., to elevate Thailand’s greenhouse gas emission management to be on par with international standards for sustainability.

This collaboration stems from the climate crisis, which has led to climate change that causes many countries to face extreme heat and an increased risk of natural disasters. The rising global temperature is primarily caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, an agreement was formed at COP under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thailand, as one of the parties, has set targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.  Additionally, international measures are in place globally to control greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in various sectors in Thailand taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

PETROMAT is the largest petrochemicals and materials science network in Thailand.  It consists of researchers from universities, collaborations with industries, and numerous research works in related areas, including biofuels, clean energy, carbon capture and storage technologies, as well as sustainable materials for a circular economy. PETROMAT also provides consultations regarding organizations’ carbon footprints. I2 Enterprise PCL is a leading business in telecommunications and communications equipment. It also offers services to assist customers in digitalizing their operations. Both parties recognize the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and are ready to support expert researchers and provide research funding for studies and development in this area.

The sense of kinship and warmth found in the Chula community is priceless and a treasure worth keeping.
