Chulalongkorn University Invites Bhutan Prime Minister Gives a Special Talk on “Enlightened Leadership”

Chulalongkorn University received the honor to welcome Hon’ble Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, who delivered a special lecture on “Enlightened Leadership” on June 27, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Chulalongkorn Auditorium. The Prime Minister was received by Prof. Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, Chair of Chulalongkorn University Council, and Prof. Dr. Wilert Puriwat, Acting President of Chulalongkorn University. In attendance was also Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security.

In his talk, Hon’ble Dasho Tshering Tobgay shared how applying Buddhist principles can lead to mutual happiness. Leadership is more than teaching others, but also about giving and learning from others. Good leadership comprises three qualities that must go hand in hand: wisdom, courage, and compassion. Courage refers to the bravery to apply wisdom to its full potential in decision making, while compassion is kindness and empathy, which are the key to making the true value of wisdom and courage.

After the talk, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Palanee Ammaranond, Acting Vice President, Chulalongkorn University, presented a bouquet as a token of appreciation to the Prime Minister of Bhutan.

This special talk aims to promote an understanding of leadership in dealing with volatility in Asia and the world. It also strengthens the long-standing relationship between the two kingdoms through education and knowledge dissemination. The talk is hosted by the Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government agencies.

Hon’ble Dasho Tshering Tobgay has been elected to serve as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan for two terms. His first term was from July 2013 to August 2018, and his second term began on January 28, 2024, and continues to the present. Besides his political work, he is also an environmental and cultural activist.

This official visit to Thailand and Chulalongkorn University by the Prime Minister of Bhutan and his wife is their first since he assumed the position of Prime Minister for the second time. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Bhutan. The strong ties between the two kingdoms are rooted in the strong relationship between the royal families of both countries, regular exchange visits at various levels, and connections through Buddhism and culture.

Chula is the place to discover one’s true individuality and the years I spent here were most enjoyable.
