The Chulalongkorn University Social Research Institute recently hosted an academic seminar titled “Economic Justice at the Base of the Economic Pyramid: Promoting Fairness and Inclusion for Informal Workers” on October 18, 2024, at the Chumbhot-Pantip Conference Room, Prajadhipok-Rambaibani Building. The seminar was opened by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, and welcomed by Associate Professor Dr. Unruan Leknoi, Director of the Chulalongkorn University Social Research Institute.
The event featured a keynote address by Prof. Martha (Marty) Chen, an expert on informal labor from Harvard University and co-founder of the WIEGO network (Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing). This was followed by a panel discussion on “Building Security for Informal Workers in Thailand’s Informal Economy,” with participants from government agencies, academia, and civil society organizations, including Callum Mackenzie from Yunus Thailand, Raja Asvanon from the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Poonsap Tulaphan from Homenet Thailand, representatives from the Ministry of Labor, and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
The seminar aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the role of informal workers in the economy and society, as well as policy development approaches to support these workers, focusing on collaboration between academia and the government to further sustainable social development.
Chulalongkorn University’s Social Research Institute is committed to strengthening its role in research and social policy development both nationally and internationally through academic seminars, research, and building collaborative networks with organizations domestically and abroad. Special attention is given to addressing pressing social issues such as promoting the rights and fairness for informal workers, tackling poverty, and advancing social equality, which are crucial for improving the quality of life for people at all levels.
