In response to the devastating impact of recent flooding in Nan Province, Chulalongkorn University has launched the “Nan Kindness: Chula Students United to Aid Nan Flood Victims” project, aimed at providing much-needed assistance to communities severely affected by this natural disaster. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent due to climate change, this initiative represents the university’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and sustainable development.
A team of 33 participants, including 26 international students, 7 Thai students, and staff, was deployed to Nan Province from October 17 to 20, 2024, in collaboration with the Princess Pa Foundation of the Thai Red Cross Society. They provided food, medical supplies, and shelter, while also gathering data for long-term recovery. During the mission, students improved their communication and teamwork skills, working with peers from 15 nationalities, including Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore, Ukraine, Russia, the UK, Nigeria, and Myanmar.
The recent flood relief efforts in Nan province, organized by Chulalongkorn University, have left a profound impact not only on the communities they helped but also on the students who participated. Reflecting on the event, one of the key organizers shared their inspiration, hopes for the students’ growth, and the valuable lessons learned during the four-day initiative.
Beyond material assistance, the students’ empathy stood out. According to Associate Professor Dr. Sukanya Sompiboon, Acting Vice President, Chulalongkorn University, “They didn’t just paint a school; they became truly involved in the community. Their interaction with the affected individuals showed an incredible capacity for emotional support. It’s all about community involvement and giving back.” The project was designed to benefit students on both personal and academic levels. “Personally, I believe students gained a deeper sense of responsibility and empathy for those heavily impacted by crises. Academically, they experienced the real world, which they can apply to their studies.”
“This project also helped Thai students experience internationalization. We specifically included students with lower English proficiency to build their confidence. It’s not just about language skills, it’s about attitude and the willingness to communicate. With the right mindset, correct grammar will follow.” Associate Professor Dr. Sukanya said.
The students faced several challenges while working in the flood-affected areas. Coordination among different teams was crucial, especially when working with partners like the Friends in Need of Pa Volunteers Foundation of the Thai Red Cross. Limited tools and materials also posed obstacles, but they did not hinder the students’ dedication.
Overcoming these challenges contributed to the students’ growth in numerous ways. “They learned the importance of inter-cultural immersion and communication, as well as the merit of working together as one. These experiences helped them appreciate the value of camaraderie, philanthropy, and giving back to society.” Associate Professor Dr. Sukanya explain.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Sukanya, “It’s about the future. After participating in activities like these, I believe students will internalize the university president’s vision of fostering a philanthropic mindset.” This initiative exemplified Chulalongkorn University’s commitment to nurturing students who are not only endowed with academic excellence but also socially responsible global citizens.
Fadhli, an Indonesian student who comes from a country that is prone to volcanic eruptions, shared the sentiments of feeling a connection to this project, as he has his own experience with volunteer work in his home country. He believes that it’s time for him to contribute his efforts, which is why he was inspired and decided to join the project.
For a Filipino student, Ryan, he mentioned that this experience is his way of giving back to Chulalongkorn University. He also added that he underwent this kind of calamity in his home country, and this may serve as an eye opener to the communities regarding climate change issues, and by helping each other, we can all make a difference. Also from the Philippines, Ann opened up that this is a project that is close to her heart since she has also served as a volunteer in her country whenever it was hit by a natural disaster.
For Erin and Mari from England, participating in the project was a meaningful way to express their gratitude for the warm hospitality they’ve received from the Thai people. Mari said that she enjoyed the opportunity to learn how to connect with people from various nationalities, embracing the experience despite cultural differences. On the other hand, Erin, an exchange student said that the project has been effective and made a positive difference in helping the Nan community and it has also offered her the chance to meet other Chula students.
The Nan Kindness project is a collaboration effort between the Office of Student Affairs and the Regional Learning Network Center at Chulalongkorn University to assist flood-affected communities. The project aims to provide disaster relief and align with the university’s broader mission of promoting volunteerism, social responsibility, and sustainable development in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it supports five key SDGs: Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. The outcome of the project will be measured both functionally and emotionally. Functionally, the university will assess the number of people helped and materials distributed, aligning with global goals such as Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
