The traditional football match between the two educational institutions, “Chulalongkorn and Thammasat,” returned in grand style after a 5-year hiatus, with the 75th edition held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Suphachalasai Stadium. This year, Thammasat University hosted the event, with Mr. Palakorn Suwanrath, a Privy Councilor representing His Majesty the King, presiding over the competition. Mr. Watchai Vilailuck, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, gave the opening speech, while Mr. Auttapol Rerkpiboon, President of the Chulalongkorn Alumni Association, presented the royal trophy to the King’s representative.
The traditional Thammasat-Chulalongkorn football match aims to strengthen unity, and friendship between students and alumni of both institutions. It is also a platform for creative expression under the theme “Dawn of Memory: New Memories for a New Day,” encouraging everyone to confidently and strongly move forward into the future.
The 75th edition of this event saw a remarkable display of collaboration from students of both Chulalongkorn and Thammasat, organizing various activities, such as a beautiful and synchronized card stunt in the stands and an exciting parade with various themes, including the royal procession, the procession of those holding the Phra Kiao, and the procession of those holding the Dhammachakra. The cheerleaders and Chulalongkorn baton carriers added vibrant colors and made the event memorable.
The atmosphere was lively and filled with excitement, with many students, university executives, and alumni from both institutions in attendance. The Prime Minister, Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, also participated in the event.
The students from both institutions joined hands to organize this 75th football match in a grand manner. This year, Chulalongkorn students filled the stands on their side before those from Thammasat, creating a beautiful and admirable sight. Additionally, Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, the President of Chulalongkorn University, made a historic appearance by personally opening the Chulalongkorn cheering stands, a first for any university president.
The appearance of the Chulalongkorn University president not only encouraged the students but also reflected the management’s commitment to having “students at the center” by being present among them, listening, feeling the atmosphere, and closely participating in the Chulalongkorn spirit.
The image of Professor Dr. Wilert in the stands not only boosted the morale of the students, team members, and cheerleaders, who had practiced for months, but also symbolized a new era for Chulalongkorn University – a university that is open, listens and values the voice of its students.
Mr. Lavaron Sangsnit, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 75th Traditional Thammasat-Chulalongkorn Football Match on the Chulalongkorn side, expressed, “This year, many alumni and current students have attended the event. The overall atmosphere was in line with our goal. The football match emphasized love and unity between the two institutions. The card stunt, parade, and football match are the charm of the traditional football event, and with the cooperation of members of the Chulalongkorn and Thammasat community, we are truly proud.”
Mr. Watchai Vilailuck, Chairman of the Organizing Committee from Thammasat University, said, “The Thammasat-Chulalongkorn football match has been connecting the two institutions for over 90 years. Although there were periods of interruption, we have successfully brought it back in grand style. The theme, ‘Dawn of Memory: New Memories for a New Day,’ emphasizes the importance of this event, which creates valuable memories and reflects the power of the new generation ready to create a future.”
The traditional football match this year was filled with excitement, and Thammasat University emerged victorious, winning 2-1 against Chulalongkorn.
The 75th Traditional Thammasat-Chulalongkorn Football Match, an event that symbolizes friendship, love, and the power of unity between the students of the two institutions, is a point of pride for both Chulalongkorn and Thammasat, as they together write a new chapter in the history of this long-standing football tradition, which will forever be remembered fondly by all.
