Chula Engineering Hosts the First Joint Meeting of Science & Engineering Deans to Launch “Thailand Science & Engineering Consortium”

On February 25, 2025, the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Witaya Wannasuphoprasit, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, held a meeting to discuss collaboration between the Science Deans’ Council of Thailand and the Engineering Deans’ Council of Thailand, aiming to drive the development of Thailand through the establishment of the “Thailand Science & Engineering Consortium.” The meeting took place at Meeting Room 1106, 11th floor, the 100th Anniversary Engineering Building at Chulalongkorn University. Prof. Dr. Wilert Puriwat, the President of Chulalongkorn University, officially opened the event and welcomed the attendees. He also proposed collaboration strategies with the Thai University Presidents Council (TUP). This was the first time in the history of higher education in Thailand that the two councils, which are leaders in scientific and technological academics, met to officially discuss concrete collaboration.

The meeting, which focused on cooperation between the Science Deans’ Association, led by Prof. Dr. Santi Maensiri, President of the Science Deans’ Association, and the Engineering Deans’ Council of Thailand, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thongchai Fongsamootr, President of the Engineering Deans’ Council, was attended by Dr. Suvit Maesincee, former Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), and Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, who provided valuable suggestions for collaboration. Various Thai research institutes also took part in the meeting and presented their work and exchanged ideas on several issues, such as the significant advancements in astronomy and space technology in the country (the Thai Space Consortium project) by Dr. Saran Poshyachinda, Director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand; the progress of the construction of a 3 billion-electron-volt synchrotron light source at the Eastern Economic Corridor by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saroj Rujirawat, Director of the Synchrotron Light Research Institute; and the development of the National Artificial Intelligence Action Plan for Thailand’s progress (AI Thailand) by Dr. Sawit Kasuriya, Deputy Director of the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC).
