Risk and Disaster Management Program Held Online Emergency Management Workshop with Free Public Lectures

During 27-29 April 2021, the Risk and Disaster Management Program, in cooperation with the SATREPS DREAM (Area-BCM) Project, the Disaster and Risk Management Information Systems Research Group, and the Faculty of Engineering, organized an online Emergency Management Workshop via the Zoom platform.  The workshop consisted of a series of free public lectures in English from notable experts, including professors from Chulalongkorn University, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, and Keio University.  Participants gained knowledge in the field of business continuity management, a process to help companies maintain normal business operations with minimal disruption before, during or after a disaster.  In total, 44 participants joined the three-day workshop.

Emergency Management Workshop

Day 1 of the workshop commenced with several lectures for the public, with introductory remarks by Asst. Prof. Natt Leelawat, D.Eng. (Director of the Risk and Disaster Management Program, Graduate School, Chulalongkorn University) and Prof. Kenji Watanabe, Ph.D. (Professor of Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan).  Asst. Prof. Akira Kodaka, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor of Keio University, Japan), was the moderator for the 3-day event.  After welcoming the participants, Prof. Kenji Watanabe, Ph.D. (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan) lectured on “Introduction of Business Continuity Management (BCM)”.  The first day public lecture workshop ended with a talk on “Risk Assessment and Business Impact Analysis” from Takahiro Ono, Ph.D. (Asian Disaster Reduction Center, Japan).

After the public lectures, the workshop transitioned into a workshop for Chulalongkorn University students, including 11 students from the Risk and Disaster Management Program, Environment Development and Sustainability Program, and Industrial Engineering Program.  The group work session 1 started off with a discussion and presentation on the topic BCP Framework”, followed by BIA: Impact Level Comparison of Prioritized Activities”.

The in-depth discussion for group work session 2 began with BIA: Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Maximum Tolerable Period of Disruption (MTPD)”.  The participants were asked to give examples for BIA Resources, Necessary Resources for Prioritized Activities.” At the end of the first day, the session concluded with group discussion on Risk Impact and Likelihood Comparison Chart.”

Day 2 of the workshop, the lecture section began with the topicLimitation of Individual BCMs and Needs for PPPBased BCM with Cases by Prof. Kenji Watanabe, Ph.D. (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan).

After the public lecture, the workshop continued for the group of Chula students, with the topics Resource Damage Estimate,” “Protection and Mitigation Measures for Key Resources, and Strategies and Solutions for Key Resources and PAs”.

The group work session 4 focused on designing a sustainable service scheme on the topic Stakeholder Analysis of AreaBCM Customer Value Chain Analysis”.

The end of the second day concluded with group work session 5, in which the participants were asked to discuss and present aboutTimeline Coordination Interoperability”.

Day 3 of the workshop focused on lectures on four topics, beginning with Introduction of AreaBCMby Asst. Prof. Natt Leelawat, D.Eng., and Jing Tang, D.Eng. (Lecturer of the International School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University).  The next lecture was on Baseline Survey in AreaBCMby Eri Ino (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan), followed by a talk onLesson Learned from AreaBCM in Thailand: What Are the Successes and Obstacles? by Kunruthai Meechang, M.Eng. (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan).  The final lecture of the day was Dancing with a Humancentered Design & Innovation Approach: A Case of Natural Disaster Project in Japanby Assoc. Prof. Jaehyun Park, Ph.D. (Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan).   The workshop finished off with an online quiz for the students.

Participants

The Emergency Management Workshop was one of the most successful academic activities conducted this year, with significant collaboration and contributions from numerous experts and organizations.  The workshop was also an example of the online academic activity that supports three Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 13 Climate Action.
